Steve, on my 88 Fox it too sounded like the pedal mount was squeaky, but it turned out to be the clutch cable itself. It had gotten rusty. Of course the other sign was that the clutch was hard to operate (great leg muscles!). Replacing the cable fixed the problem (twice).
