I haven't seen any posted responses to this, so here's my $.02:
Since the engine rotates clockwise (as you look at it) BTDC
is to the clockwise side, that is, to the right.  Thinking about
what happens as the engine rotates helps me, also the pictures of
timing marks in the Idiot book.
