Check with your local laws first -- chains and studs are illegal in 
Minnesota. I find the Vanagon to be just fine in snow up to 1 foot. After 
that it gets a little difficult, but it's still worth taking to a movie 
on a decent snow day. (When it snows here, we try to get out and drive.)
