My solution has been to not be married -- makes things much easier at
times.  Yes, there's a Significant Other, but there's no veto power on
purchases....

This one's easy.  Sell the Passat, and then buy the bug because you
need a car....


FWIW, the deal you described above sounds really good to me, certainly
better than I got on my recent bug purchase.
