You can go that route, or you can keep the bellhousing and starter and change the clutch/coverplate and flywheel. I did that when I put a type IV 2 litre into my bus and kept the 1600 box. worked ok but seems to rev a little high. I would imagine the proper box would work better in terms of mpg, longevity etc.
