If you are trying to say that Jerry Garcia never used drugs, and that even if 
he had, thousands of adoring fans who idolized him would never follow his  
example, then you are deluding yourself.
I have no idea, however, how the Dead became associated with the VW, as Jerry 
Garcia drove a Beamer.
