Subject:   Bus as polluting vehicle.

Hi Volks,

Ed.McMullin Writes: > ... People ask me about driving > an old VW and how much it polutes from time to time.

Here in NZ a Saab advert (commercial) has been shown recently that uses a mid 70s bus as an example of an old polluting vehicle while extolling the virtues of a Saab "Ecotec" engine that claims to exhaust cleaner air than it intakes. I have a problem with this :-). I read somewhere that a third of the energy consumed by a new car during its life is expended making it. Anyone have a source for this? It would be nice to have some ammunition to use against the "scrap all old cars" brigade...

W.
