Yesterday I was sitting in the empty engine compartment of my '80 Westy, looking for trouble. I have the engine out and I was wondering what else I should do while she's so indisposed. I'm wondering about my transmission. It has lately been bumping a bit when shifting from 1st to 2nd - probably a problem in the 1st/2nd synchro unit, right? I wonder if I can now remove the trans. and take it for repairs. Is this realistic, or would they want to drive the van first to get a feel for the problem? If this seems like a good idea, where should I take the trans to? A local VW shop (would they do their own trans work, or sub it out?) or a transmission shop (Aamco, or the like)? Anyone have similar work done on their ride who would have an idea of the cost? Any info appreciated, thanks!
