Subject: new engine - no start

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Well, not quite defeat yet...

On Sunday, I finished putting in a rebuilt engine I got from Mark Stephens. This is into an '80 air-cooled Vanagon. I'd never done anything like this before and was very happy to get things back together and ready to go. Overall, everything went pretty smoothly, although slowly. I didn't get try to start it on Sunday due to the late hour and a weak battery.

With the battery all charged up, I went out today to try to start it up. Rrrr, rrrr. Rrrr, rrrr. It starts! 1-2 seconds and it dies. After much grinding and only a few momentary starts, it looks like no go. Not exactly a big surprise perhaps, but definately a BIG letdown. Tonight I curl up with the Idiot Guide and try to figure out where to go from here. The fuel injection has me worried - all those electrical and hose connections are just begging for an idiot to confound.

I'd sure appreciate any info on possible solutions, things to look for, or methodology. Thanks. I'd sure like to get my van back on the road - I miss it!
