Bentley wasn't much help, neither was the English repair manual ('use the front mark on the pulley'). so i looked in the German repair manual. it shows the engine-side mark being use for timing.

well, if someone can translate this, we'll know: "Bei richtig eingestellter Zu:ndung muss die Zu:ndmarke (2) auf der in Fahrtrichtung vorderen Riemenscheibenha:lfte der Motorgeha:usetrennfuge (3) "gegenu:berstehen", wenn sie bei laufendem Motor vom Schein der Stroboskoplampe angeblizt wird.

Soll der Obere Totpunkt eingestellt werden, muss die OT-Marke (1) an die Trennfuge dedreht werden."

where (1) is the pulley mark on the bumper side of the pulley. (2) is the pulley mark on the engine side of the pulley. (3) is the split/crease of the engine case (where the mark is supposed to line up.

all i can figure from the above is that the (2) mark should line up with the (3) crease/split in the light of the stroboscope light. ??
