Also NY Times Sunday edition travel section had a special on the Copper Canyon January 12 or 19. It's an awesome place and to fully appreciate it one should denfinitely go down IN it, not just take the train past it. I spent a month in Batopilas a few years ago in Dec. and enjoyed the laid back life, the colonial architecture, and the fabulous hiking. Asked around for a family to rent a roon from rather than stay in a commercial establishment, but there's a range from very basic hostel to a luxurious refurbished colonial building. There's not much going on there with only a population of 500, but if you like isolated places in beautiful settings, this is the spot. Don't go past March or before November as the jejenes (gnats) will eat you alive. Also, if you plan to drive, I hope you have a syncro.......
