Subject:   Re: 82 Vanagon gearbox swap ?

Hello Jorgen in Lulea, Sweden:

>I own a 1982 crewcab with a broken 4-speed gearbox.

>I am about to replace it...

>Can I replace it with a 5-speed gearbox ?

1) Yes, but you may have to swap the bellhousing too, no major problem. I do not agree with Chris in this chapter. Be sure to have the right front gearbox support.

>Can/should I use the 5-speed gearbox from a diesel wanagon ?

2) Possible, but the final ratio is to low for a Wasserboxer.

>Can/should I use the 5-speed gearbox from a wassserboxer ?

3) Refer to answer 1).

>Is it worth the trouble or should I just get a new 4-speed gearbox ?

The differences of the 5 speed is a additional gear below the first of the 4 speed. (2 to 5) of a 5 speed is equal to (1 to 4) of a 4 speed.
