It's really easy to put an input shaft in. Assuming it is similar to the 1986 and up. The bell housing comes off, there is a c-clip on the shaft next to a coupling, after you remove the clip, the spline coupler will slide on the shaft to allow the shaft to turn free from the trans input shaft. NO need to remove the rear end gears.

your problem is finding what beat up the shaft!
