Blaine,

Yes, please try it and let us know. I've considered the same solution (using the left side shelf). I've also considered a very low-end work around which would involve using flex duct to route air from the left air outlet to just above the driver. This would make it easy to get around the pop-top opening. Sounds crude, but when I'm waiting for ever for cool air to get from the back to the front I might not care.
