Thanks for everyone's advice on the proper radiator thermo-switch wiring. I got the proper switch at my local VW dealer for $18.00, and installed it yesterday. Then filled/bled the cooling system. Everything went very well, and the fan came on as the temp needle climbed. No leaks. Perfect.

But as often happens, one problem is solved, but another comes to surface. I now hear a noise I never heard before. The #1 cylinder is now LOUD... a "tick tick tick" that wasn't there pre-overheating. The engine no longer smoothly revs up. It doesn't backfire, just stumbles.

My ignorant guess would be "burnt valve". Does anyone have any ideas what this "tick" could be? Is it a critical problem, or something that will go away? Or that could be cured easily?

Thanks, Paul Henderson '84 Vanagon WasserBoxer Bedminster, NJ, USA
