Subject: Loss of power/fuel problem?

I wish I had realized this list existed a couple of years ago. I must not be spending enough time playing on the computer. I recently sold my '81 Vanagon after almost 10 years with it and bought an '89 GL. The '81 had problems off and on with the fuel supply- coughing and an almost complete loss of power that I finally determined must be sediment in the tank when I discovered that (carefully) blowing into the line from the tank would solve all my problems.

Now with the 89 I have had similar problems about 3 times. The engine will be running perfectly and then all the sudden I'll have a huge loss of power followed by surges and it all feels like the van is starved for fuel (or perhaps not running on all 4 cylinders?) . The first two times it cleared up within a couple of minutes and the third it lasted longer.

The flow out of the tank seems normal and I put on a new fuel filter but it hasn't solved the problem. It doesn't seem like a clogged fuel injector or bad fuel pump would come and go sporadically like this. I would greatly appreciate whatever advice anyone might be able to give.
