I believe the TD Syncros have the same starter in the same position as the other diesels, but the fuel tank has a bump/dent in it to clear the starter. The fuel tank would be a different part no. for gas vs. diesel. Check the searchable archives for 1996 and search on "tank;diesel;syncro" to turn up a previous discussion on this topic.
