Hi again,

one thing I forgot, a $75 set of _good_ tire chains will make a pretty
ferocious difference in your glacier climbing ability!  Not to mention
mud bogging too.  This is the cheapest way to get major off-road
performance boost.  Keep a piece of 2x6 about a foot long in the van.
Have a deep wide groove cut in it big enough to take a cross-link, then
lay out the chain over the plank and drive onto it.  Easy install after
that. Retighten after 100 yards, stay under 20mph, remove asap.

    If you're like me however, you'll wait until you are truly stuck in
mud or deep snow, then have to jack and shovel enough to fit the chains
on while you freeze solid to your wrists,  kneeling on cold/wet ground.
Advantage of chains is that the rear diff doesn't need to be locked, and
you can still steering decently.
