Here is an update on my stalling problems with my 1983 Vanagon (air-cooled, non-calif) Note - 80-83 air cooled, non-california Vanagons don't have an O2 sensor to the best of my knowledge (sources include owners manual and Bentley exhaust schematic) First, I'd like to thank all those who have replied to my request for help. To date - these are the diagnostics & repairs I have performed: 1) Checked intake air sensor - OK (As per Fred "the Motorhead" from Annapolis, MD - owner of Annaptown Imports) 2) Checked aux. air regulator - open when cold, closed when warm - OK 3) Checked injector resistance - OK 4) complete tune up (new plugs, checked wires, new rotor, cap, condenser, points, replaced coil, dwell and timing) 5) replaced fuel pump and fuel filter 6) replaced vacuum lines 7) replaced some fuel lines that were in amazingly poor condition I have established without doubt that I am running rich since my new plugs are already dirty. The tentative conclusion I have reached is that the fuel pressure regulator is defective. Fred the Motorhead told me that it is his experience that my stalling problems are mainly caused by three things - defective air flow meter (big $$), defective fuel pressure regulator, or a tear in the rubber boot connected to the aux air regulator. Before ordering this part, I plan to check the #2 Temp sensor (suggested by Darrell Boehler) and the idle position switch (calif only?) (suggested by Ken Lewis). More questions: 1) Should my dirty plugs be cleaned with elctro-clean or something? I just wiped them off 2) Is there a way to adjust the CO without a CO meter? I don't have a cat converter (removed by PO), so I'm guessing I'm already running very high. Which way do you turn the screw to make it lean?
