I've been off the list for a while, but now I seek the collective wisdom out there for a problem. Fortunately, I'm happy report that I've put about 25,000 problem free miles on my vanagon during my roaming around the US in the last year. Unfortunately, I need to work again, and I've ended up in LA. So, the engine seems to be functioning normally, but it just dies when I come to a stop. HOWEVER, on some occasions which are becoming rarer, it will idle. These occasion seem to be when the engine is warm and/or the AC is being used, but there have been exceptions to this. For the most part now though, since I arrived in LA about one month ago, I've been killing my starter having to restart the engine every time I come to a stop. When it does idle properly, it sounds as normal as it ever did, and to reiterate, it runs well otherwise. I know that some people have had problems like this ONLY when the engine's cold, but mine behaves this way almost all the time now. I haven't done a tune up in about 30000 miles, but given the symptoms, I don't suspect that this is relevant. So, if anyone has any thoughts on things to check, I'd appreciate the help. Also, if there are any other listees in the vicinity who know of good mechanics in the area (west LA, SM area, or in other parts of LA), that would be nice too. Thanks, david '87 camper |
