Subject: 83 Vanagon stalling again!

I thought I had this problem fixed after I replaced the fuel pump, tuned the van up and replaced the vacuum lines, but here it is again!

The symptoms are: 1) cold starts fine 2) idles well and indefinately 3) runs well for a few minutes - power good 4) after running at speed, stalls when going back to idle 5) If I feel it stalling, I can keep the engine running by increasing the RPMs when stopped 6) won't start up after stall right away

Here is what I have done so far: 1) complete tune up (new plugs, checked wires, new rotor, cap, condenser, points, replaced coil, dwell and timing) 2) replaced fuel pump and fuel filter 3) replaced vacuum lines

Here is what people have suggested I check: 1) Vacuum leaks 2) 02 sensor - I think mine's disconnected anyway 3) Fuel pressure regulator 4) bad thermo time switch

Its clear to me that something changes once the engine is hot. I think its got to be either something with the air or something with the fuel.

Here is what I now intend to do: 1) Check AGAIN for vacuum leaks with a non-flamable carb cleaner (as per Ken Lewis) 2) check to see that my 02 sensor is indeed disconnected 3) check the thermo-time switch (like Joel Walker suggests by disconnecting the 5th injector electrical harness after engine is warm) 4) replace the fuel pressure regulator (as Jim Thompson suggests)

My questions are: 1) Am I missing something obvious? 2) Will the fuel pressure regulator cause this problem? I don't seem to be having a problem running rich which is a sure sign of F.P.R. problems.

Thanks again for re-examining this problem
