Depending on the model, rear heater cores can be pricey or barely affordable.

Vanagon 84-87 2wd & Syncros 86-91 - 867-819-121A - $89.00 (I sell these)

Vanagon 88-91 2wd - 251-819-121 - $161.15 Dealer Only :( (At least for now that I've seen)

Frankly, I don't know the differences between the two cores (Ron, Kyle - have you seen and compared? What's the diff's?)

Bentley's procedures do leave something to be desired. The Vanagon List Archives does have some tips on this procedure. Go to:
