Steve and the list,

I've noticed the same thing, but I contend no messages are missing. In your message, you were referring to "Vanagon Digest - 14 Oct 1997 to 15 Oct 1997" edition. Now, as boring as it was, I actually counted the number of messages in that Digest by hand, and I got 43, just as promised by the first line:

Here's the confusion: The list of *TOPICS* only shows the UNIQUE subject lines. If any subject had several responses, it only gets put in the topic list once, and the NUMBER of messages with that subject line is put in parentheses at the end of the line. For instance, for topic 13, "Vanagon got smacked :-(", there were 8 messages in this digest with this subject line.

If you add these up, it works out fine:

Topic # Message Count ------- ------------- 1. 1 2. 1 3. 1 4. 2 5. 1 6. 1 7. 3 8. 1 9. 2 10. 2 11. 2 12. 1 13. 8 14. 1 15. 1 16. 1 17. 2 18. 2 19. 1 20. 1 21. 1 22. 1 23. 1 24. 1 25. 1 26. 1 27. 1 28. 1 --- --- Total Topics: 28 Total Messages: 43

I, personally, have never noticed these counts to be in error. Someone else (Kit Carter) mentioned on 17 Oct 1997 that Digests with MORE messages than listed at the top have also been noticed. I can't account for that myself (never seen it), but here's one possibility:

Some people's email programs automatically duplicate the replied-to message onto the end of their messages. These duplicates sometime look just like regular messages--i.e., the headers that the email program chooses to include with the duplicate are the same or nearly the same as the headers the Vanagon "digester" includes when munching messages into a Digest. Sometimes the only clue you get that the message is a duplicate inside someone else's reply is that the seperator line looks like this:

- ------------------------------

instead of this:

------------------------------

Maybe that's what you're seeing when you see MORE messages than what's reported at the top?

Just my $0.005, Rodney
