Subject: 81 Westy- gas tank full o'schmutz
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I'm currently on the fifth fuel filter in 4000 miles on my 81 Westy. The guy who sold it to me had rebuilt the engine after it had been sitting up for over a year and apparently the gas tank collected a lot of mess in the interval; when I change the filters they're chock full of rust particles and junk. Anyway, the PO gave me a 6/6 warranty on drive train only, but after this gas tank problem became apparent we had a sort-of verbal agreement that if it didn't clear itself out he would drop the tank and boil it out at no charge.

Well, I just talked to him about it and he's clearly unhappy with the prospect, not that I blame him. However, I'm not asking you-all for advice on contract law. :) He told me that I shouldn't expect my filters to last much longer than they are, and that the tank has probably flushed most of the gunk out by now anyway. I think the first statement is clearly bull, but I dunno about the second. Is there any way he could know that besides just a wild-@ss guess? The intervals of replacing the filters had been steadily lengthening, except this last time the mileage was much less than the preceding, like 300 when the previous had been closer to 700.

Is there any chance at all he's giving me his best and possibly correct judgment, and not just trying to avoid having to do a tedious job for nothing?
