A friend of mine has a rather unique solution for carrying his bikes on his Westie. What he did was to get some of the fork lock mounts that are intended to be mounted onto a truck bed and mounted them on the rear of his fiberglass popup. These mounts are small square things that you can take off a front wheel of a bike and lock the forks into. Well, these things have holes in them so he drilled holes in his poptop, put an aluminum backing plate behind them, and used lots of silicone when he screwed it all back together. He now has 3 bike mounts on the back of his poptop. When going on a bike trip, he mounts the bikes on the back with their rear tire resting on the back bumper (out of the wind, etc.) and straps the loose front tires in the forward luggage area.

Total cost of these mounts is about $12 each (REI sells them). Much better then the gouging you would get from Yakima et. al.

A very cool solution I will be trying next summer.
