I agree with your assessment about being desolate. Route 50 ("The Lonliest Highway in America") is IMHO a LOT more beautiful than Rt. 80 through Nevada, and a LOT more pleasant to drive. I agree that I wouldn't want to have engine problems, and I also suggest taking extra fuel.
