Hi fellow two Wheel Drivers,

The old RAC Rally drivers of years gone by (pre 4WD/FWD) swore by the practice of applying the handbrake a couple of notches (with rear wheel drive cars only) if they got stuck in a muddy ditch. It works, its effect is to restrict that spinning wheels momentum - "worth a try"!

My biggest problem with the 2WD Westie is loosing traction on the FRONT end when traveling along level icey roads (especially down-hills). I've found studded tires are the only real answer to this problem, with the 2WD vehicle anyway.

As for logging roads (Alaskan dirt roads) my problem recently has been more to do with running out of ground clearance (that stupid plastic spoiler on the front of my '88). Oh yes, the rattling stove starts to get you down after a few hours, we now leave a couple of towels on top of the burners when traveling.

Chris Gibbs Eagle River, Alaska.
