You have a prayer, in fact, I know it is possible to remove the piston from
the rod with the engine installed because I just went through the same thing
not to long ago.  If you can find and afford the VW tools, go for it.  I on
the other hand am on a tight budget and had to make my own piston pin puller
using some galvanized pipe and threaded steel rod.  There is info in the
archive on how to make one or p-mail me for further instructions. It's good
to have the list back!
