I looked at the "sine wave" output of these devices on an oscilloscope, and
it is actually more of a square-wave than a sine wave (which should be
rounded).  This is the reason for their disclaimer.  In practical use, I
have not had any problem using my inverter, which uses the square wave that
they call a "modified sine wave."
