I've been thinking about this also. I'm preparing for a year long trip in my 84 Westy and I'm going to mount my CD changer behind the driver's seat vertically to the sink cabinet. This allows me to use the space under the driver's seat for the

extra battery. I also think it's less likely to get damaged in this location and it's fairly well hidden.
