I've driven from Pennsylvania to Anchorage in 10 days, its about 5000,
if i remrmber correctly.  I hitch-hiked the same distance in 14 days.
On the way up, we took the cassier highway (which i highly recommend)
instead of the alcan...neither was paved then, but major construction
had started on the alcan.  i suspect it is mostly if not all paved now.
Those were great trips i hope to retrace someday soon...(i can't imagine
the luxury of doing it in a westy ... we cooked alongside the road on
little gas stoves and slept on the ground under the stars).
