Subject: vanagon TD automatic?

I'm confused. Still looking for a very good vanagon, I've been to some traders in Wolfsburg yesterday to look what kind of busses they've got for sale. One had a '90 Bluestar (as hannover edition) TD with an ABT intercooler fitted, quite rare conversion. The condition was not too good, so I looked at the next trader. There was a '90 Turbo-Diesel AUTOMATIC for sale. I thought, they made a mistake on the 4sale-sticker and had a good look on it- IT WAS AUTOMATIC TD!

Up to yesterday I was sure VW never made this combination and always thought, a conversion couldn't be done because of the complete different shapes of the flywheel / torque-converter houses. But there it is. The car was not good enough for what I want to do with it, but what is it? Can anybody tell me, what I've seen? Is it possible to install a straight 4 (or 5) VW engine to the automatic tranny in the vanagon? Are there any kits available? Helmut, what do you think?

Many thanks for your help Michael Meier Braunschweig (20 mls from Wolfsburg)
