Subject: Re: Sensor Leaks

Alain -

Replacing the Expansion Tank Coolant Sensor is a pretty simple job, usually without the loss of any coolant, because it's located at the top of the tank, so you should be able to do it yourself. At a US Dealer I believe the sensor's about $9.00us.

I usually sell them for $8.00 (VW # 251-919-372) and unlike those USUALLY sold at the dealership, the ones I sell automatically come with a new O-Ring, which is probably the culprit in the first place causing your leak. The dealer most always sells their sensors WITHOUT the O-Ring (unless there's been a change recently).

If just the O-Ring is the cause (and I suspect it is), remove the sensor and check around at a local parts house or hardware store and look through their O-Ring stock to replace it. If you have to get the O-Ring from the dealer (Auuggghhh!), ask for part number N 90240002, which is of course ridiculously priced at $1.30us. That should solve the leaking problem IF the sensor's otherwise OK.
