I am 6'1" and also have a hard time sleeping up top when I must share the space with my wife. I have a 4' X 10" board that I use to extend the length of the upper bed. I put a folded blanket on it to raise it to the same height as the cushion and voila -- a bed that is plenty long. No more dropping your pillow over the edge in the middle of the night ;-) When not in use, the board can be kept up on top behind the folded portion of the bunk.
