Subject: 90 Vangon Trany swap
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Need advice: bought a 90 vanagon Westy camper in April 97. After 6 months, I find the 4 -speed manual transmission is just too much effort for city stop & go trafffic. I want an automatic, though I know It will not have the same power. I want the convience of the automatic, but still like my camper.

I had a rebuilt VW vanagon engine installed when I bought it ( leaking head gasket ), so I have invested a bit in the vehicle. Is it possible to swap the manual transmission for an automatic? What's involved? Cost? Anyone done this? Better yet, anyone with an automatic who wants the transplant of a 4 speed? The clutch was replaced in 96, so its in good shape. Otherwise, will sell the Westy for $11,500. Ideas?
