My '85 Westy has had hesitation problems for years. It seems to have low power, not all of the time but most of the time, while accelerating below 2500 rpm. Other symptoms are surging upon gear change and then acceleration. I also notice it during constant slow, steady, and level cruising below 2500 rpm. Sometimes while accelerating from 40 mph, full throttle, power will be low until I lift my foot and put it back down again.

I've checked the entire fuel injection and ignition systems using the procedure in the Bentley Official Factory Repair Manual. They scope out good. It passes smog with flying colors.

Recently, I've gotten a copy of Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management by Charles Probst. He recommends: a) Throttle switch faulty or misadjusted. - It's fine. b) Fuel injectors faulty or clogged. - They're clean. c) Vacuum leak. - No leaks. d) Air-flow meter faulty. - Now I'm stuck. Both Probst and the Bentley book have a spec. for the air-flow meter of "resistance varies." Well mine varies all right. It varies all over the place. It goes up, then down a little, then way up, then way down, then gradually down until it's fully open.

My question is, does anyone know how the resistance on the air-flow meter/sensor is suppose to vary? Should it be gradually up, gradually down, or all over the place like mine?

Please respond me directly at DNeu@aol.com as well as the list server. I've tried, but I just can't keep up with all the great mail you people put out. I'll still subscribe whenever I can afford the AOL time required to download 30 pieces of mail per day. I'll also look forward to meeting some of you on west coast trips Ala Busgirl.
