Subject: 91 Vanagon cold start problem[via LSMTP - see www.lsoft.com]

I have a 91 Vanagon with 140,000 miles, After replacing the head seals I found the van very hard to start when the temp is below 65F it will start above 65F with just a little extra cranking but not like it did before the head gasket change. I have checked every sensor input to the computer and they are ALL FINE. All sensors checked good including the water temp, air temp, and air flow. I checked the fuel pressure and flow (725ml/30sec) changed the cap, rotor, wires and plugs, rechecked the values ( 2 turns in from first contact) and checked the compression 125PSI all around I didn't know if this is good or bad the manual calls for 180psi on the back cover and 85-130PSI on the inside? Could my computer have gone bad? The van runs fine when it starts and is warmed up, but it has little power and will stall when cold. After it has been running it will continue to start and run fine for about 4-5 hours less if the tempeture it is in the 30's. I did notice that the O2 sensor's "ground path" ( through the head and exaust system to the sensor ) would change from 150K ohms when cold to 3 ohms when hot , so a added a ground wire but it did not help. I tried the local dealers and the have NEVER SEEN A WATERBOXER !!! It seems that they didn't sale any here in Italy, just turbo diesels.

Thanks for your help. Skiersouth@aol.com
