Subject: Tanrsmission Rebuild ?[via LSMTP - see www.lsoft.com]

Item Subject: cc:Mail Text Hi All,

Well after a year or more of whining, the fourth gear of my '85 Westy went out. So, I have a few questions I would like the list wisdom on.

1) Could a backyard mechanic rebuild a transmission or is this best left to those with special tools and knowledge?

2) Is a junk yard transmission with less than 80K miles on it an acceptable way to go (my Vanagon has 230K on it)?

3) What rebuilders of transmission are out there that do good work at a reasonable price?

I am going now to the archives to research this; but, any fresh advice would be appreciated.

Vince, '85 Westy GL.
