Hi again, volks;
What about the 5-cylinder motors in the South African T3's? These
aren't the same as the dreaded, piston-slapping 5-cylinder motors as
in the early Eurovans, are they?
Pardon my ignorance; my background is with the boxer motors,
specifically the Type IV. The mention of front-drive VWs brings to
mind memories of acquaintances with blown-up Rabbits. However, the
repair records for the A2 Golfs/Jettas are pretty good. I have to go
by the facts, because the hearsay that I hear for front-drive VWs runs
the gamut from both extremes as reliability goes.
My 1.9 runs like a top with no problems (knock on wood) but that may
change any time. I actually know of some happier people with Type
IV-equipped breadloafs and Vgons in my area, so would it be plausible
to downgrade to one of those motors with a change of heater blower
assembly etc.etc. if my Wasserboxer fries and a replacement is
outta-sight expensive? Will the tin fit? I am aware of a transmission
changeover for the 1983 model year, but I'm not sure if the aircooled
models got the new tranny as well as the '83.5 models. I know all you
guys will laugh, but I need to know this, even though it's not in my
plans.
Thanks for any answers to these ignorant questions.
Sam
