Scott: FWIW, I have used this technique very successfully on rear-engine air cooled vehicles. Find the appropriate socket, attach breaker bar and secure to pulley nut. Next remove coil wire and turn engine over with starter motor.The pulley turns CW while the socket keeps the bolt from turning i.e. the bolt turns CCW with respect to the pulley.I have NOT tried it on a W/B.
