I think more people here in Northern Calif. would be doing the Golf-to-waterboxer conversion if they could find the parts needed for a reasonable price. You would need a sump, oil pump pickup, motor mount system, bellhousing, input shaft, clutch, flywheel, and other parts I forgot to mention, from a diesel Vanagon. These parts are relatively rare in the U.S. because not many diesels were sold here. Also, a shop in San Francisco has been doing this conversion for a few years and has probably sucked up all the needed parts for miles around. I talked to a guy in Texas who wants to sell a set of these parts for $800, not including the Golf engine. For me, that was expensive enough to make me drop the idea. Now, if someone wants to give you $2500 for your old waterboxer engine, that would generate the cash needed... ===================================== Mike Catlin <mjcatlin@dcn.davis.ca.us> Davis, California, USA |
