The most infuriating cause of the hesitation problem that I have found is poor soldering in the computer. There are two large power resistors at the rear of the printed circuit board whose leads did not wet properly. After 100,000 miles they become maddingly intermittent. A simple resoldering fixes it.

VW has NEVER admitted to this problem, and typically $2000 in dealer charges get racked up without getting you anywhere near the simple fix. One mechanic at the "leading" Arizona VW dealer did not even know where the computer was. But he did manage to trash brand new hatch gas springs by using Vise Grip pliers on them!
