Mark,

I put in a new Sachs clutch kit this summer with a resurfaced flywheel, and
after a month began to have some serious chatter problems. After seeing the
List postings about a Sachs recall I was looking forward (?) to pulling the
clutch again.

However I'm glad to find it isn't needed. Two weeks ago I replaced a leaking
clutch master cylinder and changed the fluid. No more chatter in the clutch.

Clutch chatter can be caused by lots of things that affect the "stiffness" and
accuracy of the gradual load take-up. While Sachs may have a problem, they may
also be blamed for other system problems, like my master cylinder.

Last question-  I unfortunately find myself in need of a new clutch.  I
was looking through the archives and found posts from earlier this year
dealing with problems experienced after installing Sachs clutches.  Ron
at the Bus Depot said he hasn't been having any returns so I assume the
problems have been dealt with.  Anyone had any problems recently?  I
found a post with some detailed instructions on replacing the clutch and
pilot bearing but I'll be having the work done by a non-VW mechanic so
any additional tips would be much appreciated.  Thanks for the help
