Item Subject: cc:Mail Text Aaron,

I had similar experience with my fourth gear on my '85. After looking at the Bentley manual on rebuilding a transmission, I decided not to do it myself (some special tools are needed and there are numerous checks that need to be performed to do a complete job). I also considered a used transmission. I found two; one from a yard in Corvallis Oregon ($750, 90 days -- I don't know why I bother with this yard they are always way high!!!) and one from a yard in Salem Oregon ($350, 90 days). Neither knew what miles were on the vehicle they came out of (I would not do a used trans unless the vehicle had less than 100K miles on it). So, I put in a rebuilt transmission from German Transaxels in Bend Oregon because they had the best warrantee (2 years) and sounded really knowledgeable (they even recommended a synthetic oil that they also sold to me). The cost was $1080 that included shipping from them, shipping back the core, and $40 worth of synthetic oil. They also charged a $400 core charge I hope to be getting back when they receive and inspect the transmission I sent them. I put in new clutch parts, oil seal, & output shaft bearing that cost about $150 from the Bus Depot. The job was completed last night and it runs good so far -- one test drive. The transmission is a lot quieter than my old one and seems to be geared a little differently (I now can go 65mph at about 3800rpm instead of 4000rpm). Hope this helps.

Well, my '85 transmission is gone. I was on one of my cross-state trips (Snip)
