Derek,

I had the dread AFM hiccup in my 87 and the dealer cable fix made it go away, but I believe there is a circuit in the archives that describes a much cheaper fix (like $1.50 for a .02ufd capacitor). You can also take the cap off the AFM and clean the resistor track and then readjust the wiper to take a slightly different path. I did that on the 90.
