When that happened to my 84 Wolfsburg, somebody told me the air flow flapper valve in the air flow sensor sometimes gets gummed up. Sure enough, I cured it by thoroughly cleaning the pivots inside the intake air sensor with spray carburetor cleaner. It's happened once since then and I cured it the same way.
