Subject: Starter/Flywheel adaptors???
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I put a '81 2.0L in my '73 westy, but because the '81 flywheel/clutch didn't fit the tranny bell housing, I used the '73 flywheel/clutch -- which was quite a bit smaller. The clutch eventually died, so now I've machined out the inside of the bellhousing a bit (didn't take much) and got the engine back in, it turns over by hand fine, no clearance problems there. However, when I tried to start it, the starter jammed. So, methinks, I'll use an '81 starter, and, comparing them side by side, I see considerable difference. The shaft is a good bit longer, as is the gear. Tooth spacing is the same, so that's not a problem. But when I try to put it in, it won't go all the way flush (duh, the shaft is too long), however, if I put some spacers (about a 1/4-3/8") on the bolt & stud, I can mount it and it starts the engine quite well. My question is: Does anyone make an adaptor plate for this? It works okay, but there's one hellish gap there for junk to get in which I'd like to close. I can get one machined of course, but if they're on the market I'm sure it'd be much cheaper. Please email me as I read the list via the archives. Thanx.
