I backed into a pole last summer and spent a day straightening all the stuff and epoxy-ing the bumper ends. The big thing I found was that the bumper end attachment points are very weak (Part of the sheet metal). If I was to mount something else, I would avoid using these anchor points.

I thought a checker-plate step bumper from a small truck would work. I have seen Vanagons with wooden bumpers.
