Larry, i have an 84 vanagon with 209,000 miles on it, and every winter it does exactly what you have described. i recently got tired of this condition and am currently finishing remedying the situation. a different brand of engine. what you might look into, is a "new"(rebuilt) vanagon engine. the problems will go away for a while.

good luck in your forthcoming adventures,
