Subject: Upright AUDI 5 Cylinder in Vanagon? Kevin Disse asked.

As Kevin's return address is wrong:

From: KEVIN DISSE To: Helmut.Zeidler Subject: 5 Cylinder Vanagon Conversion Date: Thursday, 11. December 1997 04:23 Helmut, Why did you mount your five cylinder engine upright rather than at the same angle of the in-line four diesel vanagon ? Thanks, Kevin Disse ------------------------------------------

Hello Kevin, That's because of the arrangement of the bellhousing. This part is originally used by VW South Africa and fits very well between gearbox and engine. The engine mount, a original VW part, too, only supports this 'upright' mounting. Another reason is the large intake manifold. Even I used an 90 degree angled rubber duct out of another AUDI, this is very closed to the left wall of the engine compartment. There is no space to turn the engine more than the standard 40 degrees, which is same used in the AUDI passenger cars. If you like to build up same engine swap: The air intake ductwork, which I did in plastic pipes, have to be modified. The plastic don't resist the temperatures in the engine compartment and this cause some leaks and wrong air comes into the system. I modified this, but have to write an update for the Web site. Stay tuned to Tom's VW pages to get new information about Vanagon engine swaps. I you require specific advices, just drop a mail. Regards Helmut
